What Type 5 Looks Like and What It Means

Type 5 sits on the looser end of normal. The stool is soft and in clear-cut pieces, passed easily. A single episode of type 5 is usually not concerning, but regular type 5 can indicate a mild increase in colonic transit speed, possibly due to dietary factors.

Common Causes of Type 5 Stool

What You Can Try at Home

Type 5 in Depth: The Loose-End of Normal

Type 5 is soft, separate blobs with clear-cut edges - think of small, distinct, well-formed pieces that pass easily. Unlike type 6 (mushy with ragged edges) or type 7 (entirely liquid), type 5 maintains clear shape and edges, which indicates that colon transit is faster than ideal but the stool has still formed distinct pieces. It sits just beyond the normal range but is generally not clinically significant as a one-off occurrence.

Many people regularly produce type 5 without any underlying problem. Dietary variables - eating more fruit and vegetables than usual, having a higher-fibre meal, drinking more coffee - can temporarily shift stool form from type 4 to type 5. This is not a sign of illness. The concern arises when type 5 is persistent (more than 2-3 weeks consistently), particularly if accompanied by urgency, frequency increases, or other symptoms.

Sugar Alcohols: A Common and Underrecognised Cause

Sugar alcohols (polyols) - including sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, and maltitol - are used as sweeteners in sugar-free sweets, chewing gum, diet drinks, and low-calorie products. They are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and pass into the colon where they draw water osmotically, accelerating transit and producing type 5 or type 6 stools. If you have recently increased your intake of sugar-free products and noticed a shift in stool form, this is likely the explanation. Reading ingredient labels for any of these -ol suffix sweeteners is worthwhile.

Caffeine and Colonic Motility

Caffeine is a gastrointestinal stimulant. It accelerates colonic transit in most people and is one reason why many people experience a bowel movement within 20-30 minutes of drinking coffee. High caffeine intake - more than 3-4 cups per day - can consistently push stool form towards type 5. If you are concerned about loose stools, moderating caffeine intake is a simple and effective first step.

Type 5 and IBS

In the context of IBS, consistent type 5 may represent early IBS-D or may be within IBS-M. If you are tracking your stool type and find that more than 25% of your stools are types 5-6-7 with fewer than 25% types 1-2, this meets the Rome IV criterion for IBS-D and is worth discussing with your GP. Our IBS Stool Chart guide covers the full NHS treatment pathway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is type 5 stool normal?+

Type 5 is at the edge of normal - not ideal, but not clinically concerning for most people as an occasional occurrence. It represents stool that has moved through the colon slightly faster than optimal, so it has not fully consolidated into the smooth sausage of type 4. Dietary factors - higher fibre intake, caffeine, sugar alcohols - often explain it. Persistent type 5 (more than 2-3 weeks) warrants dietary review and potentially GP discussion.

What is the difference between type 5 and diarrhoea?+

True diarrhoea (types 6-7) produces mushy, fluffy, or completely liquid stool with no clear shape. Type 5 produces distinct, separate soft blobs with clear-cut edges - the stool still has defined form, just not the continuous sausage of type 4. Type 5 does not typically cause urgency, incontinence, or significant disruption to daily life in the way that type 6-7 can. The distinction matters clinically because persistent type 6-7 is more likely to indicate an underlying condition.

Can eating more fruit and vegetables cause type 5 stool?+

Yes, particularly if the increase is sudden. A large increase in dietary fibre, especially soluble fibre from fruit, can temporarily accelerate gut transit and shift stool form from type 4 to type 5. This is generally a sign that your gut is responding to the fibre, not a sign of illness. Introducing dietary changes gradually - over 2-4 weeks - minimises this effect and allows the gut microbiome to adapt.

Should I take medication for type 5 stool?+

No. Type 5 is generally not a condition that requires medication. Identifying and reducing dietary triggers (sugar alcohols, excess caffeine, sudden fibre increases) is the first step. Loperamide (Imodium) is appropriate for occasional loose stools when urgency is inconvenient (travel, events), but should not be taken routinely for type 5 without medical advice. If dietary adjustments do not resolve persistent type 5, speak to your GP.
